“On the recording, the orchestral and choral textures are subjected to refined engineering, the end result bearing sonorous clarity and attention to detail … Instrumental solos emerge from the fabric with pristine focus, and the orchestral tuttis unfold in gorgeously layered interlock.”

Grammy®-winning engineer Mark Willsher moves seamlessly between roles as scoring mixer, classical recording engineer, producer, and supervising music editor. His expertise spans a wide range of genres, from film to classical, folk, and hip-hop – with a discography that includes: The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Re-releases of the Original Star Wars soundtracks, Lyle Lovett, Michael Franti and Spearhead, Downton Abbey, The St. Lawrence & Kronos String Quartets, and the San Francisco Symphony.

In addition to production work Mark has always been actively involved in audio education as both guest lecturer and guest faculty. He has lectured at The Peabody Institute, MIT, The San Francisco Conservatory of Music, The Royal Academy of Music, and was guest audio faculty at the Banff Centre for the Arts in Canada for seventeen years. Since 2023 Mark has been guest faculty at the Verbier Festival in Switzerland. He is also on the panel of immersive audio experts for the ECHO Project: A collaborative research project on 3D microphone array techniques for orchestral recording, which has broad industry sponsorship.
With a background in music performance and a deep understanding of all technical aspects of the recording process, Mark’s guiding philosophy is to create recordings that allow listeners to be fully immersed in the emotional experience – free from awareness of speakers, microphones, editing, or mixing.

Approach & Areas of Focus
Mark’s work sits at the intersection of film, classical, and immersive audio. He is equally comfortable:
shaping large orchestral scores for theatrical presentation
building intimate chamber and solo recordings for classical releases
designing immersive listening experiences that translate across cinema, home entertainment, and binaural playback.
Key areas of focus include:
Film Score Mixing – creating mixes that serve both the film and the soundtrack album, with stems and deliverables designed to support re-recording mixers, post-production teams, and label deliverable requirements - while never losing sight of the music’s intent.
Classical Recording & Production – capturing orchestral, chamber, and contemporary classical projects with an emphasis on realism, depth, and musical detail.
Music Editing & Score Supervision – helping composers, directors, and picture editors manage complex revisions, conforming, and cue structure over the life of a project.
Immersive & Format-Aware Mixing – working in stereo, surround, and immersive formats from the outset, rather than treating them as afterthoughts.
